Education is a traditionally passive experience. The instructor speaks, the student listens, and is expected to learn in the process. The problem is that Learning is an Active process. A passive process can never translate into an active one.
There are three major components of learning. There is comprehension, retention and application. Comprehension is when the professor teaches, and helps you understand the concept that is being discussed. Some programs do a better job at this than others, but normally during class, you should at least leave the lecture with a basic understanding of what was covered.
Unfortunately, short-term understanding is not sufficient. There must be an ability to retain or memorize what was covered. Students are expected to “study” to retain the material, but are not given tools to enable them to retain the materials.
